Fasting: Training the Soul

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and an important act of worship that brings Muslims closer to Allah. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other things that break the fast from dawn until sunset.

However, fasting is about much more than staying hungry or thirsty. It is an opportunity to train the soul, control our desires, improve our behaviour, and strengthen our relationship with Allah.

Fasting in the Quran

Allah says:

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 183)

This verse explains that one of the main purposes of fasting is to develop Taqwa: awareness of Allah that guides our words, actions, and decisions.

How to Benefit from Fasting

1. Practise Self-Discipline

Fasting teaches us to control our desires and avoid harmful habits. It reminds us that we can choose what is right instead of following every impulse.

2. Develop Patience

Staying away from food and drink during fasting hours teaches patience and helps us remain calm when facing difficulties or uncomfortable situations.

3. Increase Gratitude

Fasting reminds us of the blessings we sometimes take for granted. It encourages us to appreciate our food, health, family, and the many gifts Allah has given us.

The Beauty of Fasting

Fasting helps Muslims develop a stronger character and a deeper sense of responsibility towards themselves and others. It encourages generosity, compassion, and self-control.

By understanding the true purpose of fasting, we can make it an opportunity for spiritual growth that continues beyond Ramadan.

At Thughr Academy, we believe that learning the wisdom behind Islamic worship helps learners strengthen their faith and bring Islamic values into their everyday lives.
