Zakah: Purifying Wealth and Helping Others

Zakah is one of the five pillars of Islam and an essential act of worship. It teaches Muslims that wealth is a blessing from Allah and that we have a responsibility towards those who are less fortunate.

By giving a prescribed portion of their eligible wealth to those entitled to receive it, Muslims purify their wealth, develop generosity, and contribute to a more caring and supportive society.

Zakah in the Quran

Allah says:

وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ

"And establish prayer and give Zakah."

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 43)

This verse highlights the importance of Zakah alongside Salah and reminds Muslims that caring for others is an essential part of their faith.

How to Understand the Purpose of Zakah

1. Purifying Wealth

Zakah reminds us that wealth is a trust from Allah. Giving what is due helps develop generosity and prevents us from becoming overly attached to material possessions.

2. Supporting Those in Need

Zakah provides assistance to eligible people who face financial difficulties. It helps meet essential needs and gives people greater support and security.

3. Strengthening Society

When Muslims fulfil their responsibility towards others, communities become more supportive. Zakah encourages solidarity, compassion, and a sense of shared responsibility.

The Beauty of Zakah

Zakah teaches us that true wealth is not measured only by what we own, but also by how we use our blessings. It develops gratitude, generosity, and concern for others.

By understanding the wisdom behind Zakah, Muslims can appreciate how worship connects personal faith with responsibility towards society.

At Thughr Academy, we believe that learning the pillars of Islam helps learners understand their responsibilities and practise their faith with knowledge and sincerity.
